The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a jetliner designed to observe the solar system’s infrared wavelengths. Traveling up to 45,000 feet high on 10-hour flights, SOFIA allows scientists to gather data about the birth and death of stars, black holes, the formation of new solar systems, and more.
The SOFIA is a modified Boeing 747SP jetliner, developed by NASA in the U.S., and the DLR in Germany. Its 106-inch diameter telescope has the capability to be upgraded after flights, setting it apart from space-based telescopes.
